Jaipur, Nov 4 (IANS) The driver of a speeding dumper that allegedly crushed 26 people and injured several others in a horrific accident in Jaipur’s Harmara has been booked for culpable homicide.
Police officials said on Tuesday that the condition of seven of the 26 injured remains critical at the trauma center of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital.
SHO (Harmara) Uday Singh Yadav is investigating the case.
Police officials confirmed that the accused driver is currently hospitalized and will be arrested as soon as he is discharged.
This accident happened near Loha Mandi Petrol Pump on Road No. 14 at around 1 pm on Monday afternoon, when the dumper speeding towards the highway went out of control.
Eyewitnesses said the dumper hit pedestrians, two-wheelers and cars for 400 metres, leaving the road littered with damaged vehicles and human remains.
Complainant Digpratap Singh (26), resident of Akera Dungar, said in his FIR that the speeding driver hit several people and vehicles. The two victims are unidentified. Eyewitnesses described the incident as “horrific”, with human body parts scattered on the road.
Late on Monday night, DCP (Traffic) Sumit Mehrada suspended traffic CI Rajkiran, ASI Rajpal Singh and constable Mahesh Kumar for negligence as the dumper had entered the no-entry zone illegally.
Dumper driver Kalyan Meena, resident of Viratnagar (Jaipur), was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The local people caught him on the spot and handed him over to the police.
Meanwhile, families of the deceased alleged that ambulance drivers demanded Rs 2,200 to take the bodies to Niwai, claiming that no government facility was available free of cost.
The District Collector assured that any amount taken will be returned and action will be taken against the officials responsible.
Police investigation revealed that there was a heated argument with the car driver outside a petrol pump about 1.5 km before the accident. Ironically, the killer dumper had a chilling message written on the back: “Go ahead if you dare, if not endure.”
