Jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Narges Mohammadi To Face Additional 1 Year Jail Term

An Iranian court has sentenced 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Nargess Mohammadi to an additional year of imprisonment behind bars for spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic, his family said on Monday.

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Mohammadi to 15 months in prison after a trial he boycotted, his family said in a statement.

She was also ordered to spend two years in exile outside Tehran, imposed a two-year travel ban and a two-year ban on smartphone use, restrictions that will eventually come into effect after her release.

The family said it was Mohammadi’s fifth sentence since March 2021, which now includes 12 years and three months’ imprisonment, 154 lashes, two years’ exile and various social and political restrictions.

The family condemned the verdict, saying it amounted to a “political statement”, emphasizing the allegations that “she repeatedly incited public and personal opinion against the Islamic regime to create chaos and disorder and Encourages”.

Mohammadi, whose family accepted the 2023 Nobel Prize on her behalf in Oslo in December, was given the award in recognition of her campaigning for human rights in Iran.

He has spent most of the last two decades in and out of prison and began serving his most recent sentence in November 2021.

But behind bars in Tehran’s Evin prison she has not stopped campaigning for her rights, accusing authorities of systematic violations and particularly criticizing their use of the death penalty.

A staunch opponent of mandatory hijab in the Islamic Republic, she has also flouted rules about wearing a headscarf inside prison.

According to his family, this resulted in Mohammadi being further punished, notably being deprived of the right to make phone calls.
