Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan granted bail in 12 cases related to May 9 violence

Islamabad:

An anti-terrorism court on Saturday granted bail to jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was arrested in a corruption case involving May On the 9th, there were 12 cases of attacks on military installations by its supporters.

ATC Judge Malik Ejaz Asif allowed Pakistan Tehreek – e-Insaf party founder Mr Khan released on bail.

The court said there was no reason to continue arresting Mr Khan, 71, as all defendants in the May 9 case were out on bail.

Mr Khan will remain in jail as he was convicted in numerous other cases.

The court order came a day after independents backed by Mr Khan’s party won nearly 100 seats in the National Assembly.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also granted bail in 13 cases in the same case.

Qureshi is also in jail facing charges in other cases and will not be released.

Mr Khan and Qureshi, a staunch supporter of PTI, were charged in these cases on February 6.

The two were produced in court and the former prime minister told the judge that he was illegally arrested on May 9 inside the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The violence broke out on May 9 after Mr. Khan was arrested in a corruption case and was booked in several cases.

The cases registered in Rawalpindi include attacks on the main headquarters gates, riots at offices of sensitive agencies, etc.

Mr Khan denied the allegations made in the first information report in the case.

Earlier, after his release from Adiala jail, Qureshi was taken away from the jail by the Punjab police in connection with the attack on the headquarters.

The anti-terrorism court also approved the bail application of former federal minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in a case related to the May 9 attack.

Rashid, once an ally of Mr Khan who later distanced himself from the party, has been released from prison.

Dozens of cases have been registered against Mr Khan since a no-confidence vote ousted his government in April 2022, and he has so far been convicted in four of them.
