A French appeals court has sentenced the only man who challenged his conviction for drugging and raping Gisele Pellicot while she was unconscious to 10 years in prison, French media reported Thursday.
Construction worker Husemettin Dogan, 44, was sentenced to nine years in prison last year in his first trial over drugs and rape. This early action impacted France and saw Ms. Pellicot become a global symbol against sexual violence. The appeals jury, which handed down the increased sentence, consisted of three judges and civilians, unlike the five judges who presided over Dogan’s first trial.
It is noteworthy that 50 other people convicted last December did not appeal against the historic verdict. These included Giselle Pellicot’s ex-husband Dominic Pellicot, who mixed intoxicants in her food and drink to make her unconscious. He then offered to film these horrific attacks to strangers he met online between 2011 and 2020.

Dominic Pellicott was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum possible. He accepted his role and did not appeal.
The punishment for other convicted persons ranged from three to 15 years’ imprisonment. One of them was convicted of drugging and raping his own wife with the help of Dominic Pellicote.
The trial received international attention after Gisele Pellicot protested against a closed hearing, a demand made by many of the defendants. The court took his side. Her courage inspired campaigners against sexual and gender violence and the shocking case led to a national discussion on rape culture in France.
