Srinagar, Nov 15 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat on Saturday said the blast inside Naugam police station was unfortunate and ruled out any ‘terrorist link’, saying other theories behind the unfortunate incident are just ‘unnecessary speculations’.

“A huge quantity of explosive material was brought from Faridabad to Naugam police station and kept safely in an open place,” the DGP said at a press conference at the Police Control Room (PCR) here.

“Due to the massive nature of the seizure, the process of taking samples of explosive material to forward the samples for further forensic and chemical investigation was going on for the last two days, yesterday and the day before yesterday.

“Due to the volatile and sensitive nature of the explosive material, the handing over was being done with utmost caution.

“Unfortunately around 11.20 pm on Friday night, the seized material accidentally exploded.

“Any further speculations regarding the cause of this incident are unnecessary. In this unfortunate incident, nine people have lost their lives. One Special Investigation Agency personnel, two revenue officers, three FLS team personnel, two crime branch photographers and a tailor have lost their lives.

“The police station building was badly damaged and nearby buildings were also affected. The reason for this unfortunate incident is not yet clear. The police stands strongly with the families of the deceased.”

The DGP did not answer any questions during the press conference.

The injured have been shifted to the Army Base Hospital in Badami Bagh area and Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKICC) Soura for treatment.

Earlier on Saturday morning, DGP Nalin Prabhat along with senior police officers went to Naugam police station to assess the situation on the spot.

The explosion inside the Naugam police station was so powerful that the glasses of nearby buildings were broken and the sound of the explosion was heard even in areas 5-10 kilometers away from the Naugam area.

Due to the massive explosion, several vehicles parked inside the police station caught fire and fire tenders were pressed into service to extinguish the fire.

Ambulances reached the police station to take the injured policemen to the hospital.

Let us tell you that when Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with Haryana Police, busted a white-collar terrorist module in Faridabad, 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate was recovered.

During the raid at Dr. Muzammil Ganai’s house in Faridabad, 360 kg of explosive material was recovered.

While Dr. Adil Rather and Dr. Muzammil Ghani were arrested, the third terrorist accomplice, Dr. Omar Nabi, escaped arrest. He later died in a car explosion near the Red Fort, killing several civilians and injuring many others.

Shaheen Shahid, a female doctor from Lucknow, was also arrested after an assault rifle was recovered from her car.

The arrest of two over ground workers (OGWs) of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist organization led to the busting of the terror module.

An offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammed that calls itself the People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF) has claimed responsibility for the blast, but this has been categorically rejected by the DGP.
