An explosive device detonated under the car of one of Italy’s leading investigative journalists as it was parked outside his home, drawing condemnation from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and others on Friday. No one was injured.
The report, an investigative series on Italy’s state-run RAI3, said the overnight blast destroyed Sigfrido Ranucci’s car and damaged a family’s second car and the house next door in Pomezia, in the south. RomeIt said the explosion was so powerful that it could have killed anyone passing by.
PoliceFirefighters and forensic teams were investigating, the report said.
Meloni expressed his solidarity with Ranucci, the report’s lead anchor, and condemned what he called a “serious act of intimidation.”
“Freedom and independence of information are essential values of our democracy, which we will continue to defend,” he said in a statement.
The Report is one of the few investigative programs on Italian television and regularly features news involving prominent Italian politicians, business leaders and public figures. This week, Ranucci was acquitted in the latest defamation case he faced over a story he reported.
