Italy opened its first ‘sex room’ in jail for prisoners

Rome:

Italy’s first sex room for prisoners went into operation on Friday, when a prisoner was allowed a visit from his female partner in a special facility in a prison in the Central Umbria region.

Private visits for some prisoners follow the decision of a constitutional court, recognizing the right to “intimate meetings” with partners coming from outside.

“We are happy because everything went away smoothly, but it is necessary to maintain maximum privacy to protect the people involved,” Ubria’s Lokpal, Giuseppe Caforio, told the AnsA news agency for the rights of prisoners.

“We can say that one type of experiment was good and there would be other meetings in the next few days,” he said about the first intimate meeting in the jail in the terni.

Published in January 2024, the court said that prisoners should have the right to private meetings with spouse or long -term partners, in which no jail guards are watching.

The ruling said that the so -called conjugated visits were already allowed most of the European countries. The list includes France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden and others.

The Ministry of Justice issued a guideline last week stating that the prisoners should reach the intimate meetings with a bed and a toilet for two hours.

The guidelines stated that the door of the room should be unlocked, which gives the prison guard the possibility of intervening if needed.

Italian jails are one of the worst congested rates in Europe, and a spike has been recorded in suicides recently. According to official data, there are more than 62,000 prisoners in the country, which is more than 21% of the official maximum capacity of prisons.
