Italy cable car crash leaves four dead

Rome:

Firefields said four people died and were injured on another Thursday, when a cable car fell near Naples, a southern Italian coastal city.

The report stated that on the Gulf of Naples, a cable broke at the link carrying tourists from the Custelmare de Stabia city, Mount Fito, about three kilometers (1.8 mi) away.

The fire department said in a telegram post, “Four lifeless bodies were found, while a fifth injured man was rescued and rushed to the hospital,” saying that it was a final toll.

More than 50 firefighters participated in rescue efforts.

A cabin carrying 16 passengers was close to Castailmere and was placed on the firm ground. Media reports said that another second cabin was above a prefix on Mount Feto and Fog delayed the attempt to rescue, media reports said.

The cable car was reopened for the summer season and the prosecutors said that they had started an investigation into the accident.

“The cable-car was reopened with all the necessary security situations 10 days ago,” said Umeberto De Gregorio, the head of the cable car company.

He said, “What happened today is an unimaginable, unattainable tragedy.”

His office stated that Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, who was on a visit to Washington, expressed “honestly condolences” to the families of the victims.

The cable car has been working since 1952 and a similar accident also died in 1960.

In May 2021, a cable car crashed in Italian Alps near Magior Lake, killing 14 people. In 1998, an American fighter jet cut a steel cable flying on a training flight and killed 20 people in a cable car in dolomites.
