Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is seeking 100,000 euros ($109,345) in damages after a deepfake pornographic video of her was made and spread online. Investigators said the two men placed Ms. Meloni’s face against another person’s body, made pornographic videos of Ms. Meloni and then uploaded them to the Internet. The 40-year-old man and his 73-year-old father were reportedly charged with defamation. British Broadcasting Corporation.
According to police, they were found by tracking the smartphone used to upload the video. The deepfake video dates back to 2022, when she was appointed prime minister of the country.
It is worth noting that some defamation cases in Italy can constitute a criminal offense and result in jail time. Ms Meloni is due to testify on July 2. The videos were uploaded to a U.S. porn website and viewed “millions of times” over several months, according to the indictment.
The Italian prime minister’s legal team said the request for damages was “symbolic”. They added that Ms Meloni would be donating the entire amount to “support women who are victims of male violence”. Maria Giulia Marongiu, a lawyer for Ms. Meloni, said the demand for compensation would “send a message to victims of such abuses that they should not be afraid to press charges.”
