Tel Aviv, Israel:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved a new round of Gaza ceasefire talks in Doha and Cairo, his office said on Friday, days after talks stalled.

Hamas and Israel have blamed each other for failing to reach a deal since the U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution on Monday calling for an “immediate ceasefire.”

Negotiations between Hamas and Israel on a Gaza truce and the release of hostages are continuing, mediator Qatar said on Tuesday, but the warring sides and the mediator have since provided little information.

Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister spoke with Mossad chief David Barnea about the talks, but declined to elaborate on whether Barnea would travel to Doha or Cairo for the talks.

The war began after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel that killed about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

The Israeli military launched a retaliatory offensive against Hamas, resulting in the deaths of 32,623 people in the Gaza Strip, the majority of whom were women and children, according to the Health Ministry of Hamas-controlled areas.

Palestinians held about 250 Israeli and foreign hostages during an attack on Israel on October 7, but dozens were released during a week-long truce in November.

Israel believes some 130 people remain in Gaza, of whom 33 are presumed dead, including eight soldiers and 25 civilians.
