Damascus:
Several Israeli missiles hit a residential building in the Kaf Sousa district of the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Wednesday, Syrian state media reported.
The neighborhood has residential buildings, schools and an Iranian cultural center near a large, heavily fortified complex used by security agencies. The area was the target of an Israeli attack in February 2023 that resulted in the death of an Iranian military expert.
The Syrian state news agency SANA stated that the target of the “Israeli attack” was a residential building, but did not mention the casualties. It posted a picture of the charred side of the multi-story building.
Witnesses heard several explosions in succession. Witnesses told Reuters the blast frightened children at a nearby school and ambulances rushed to the area.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Iran has been a major backer of President Bashar Assad during Syria’s nearly 12-year conflict. Its support for Damascus and Lebanon’s Hezbollah has drawn regular Israeli airstrikes aimed at containing Tehran’s extraterritorial military might.
