Israel used its maritime missile defense system for the first time to shoot down a drone that flew in from the Red Sea and sounded an alarm in the port city of Eilat, the military said on Tuesday.
Eilat has frequently been the target of missiles launched in Yemen by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in a show of support for Hamas. Hamas is the Palestinian group that rules Gaza and is also backed by Iran.
The military said that after the Gaza war broke out, Israel deployed missile boats in the Red Sea. One of the missile boats shot down the drone using a new system called C-Dome.
“Overnight, for the first time, the Israel Defense Forces’ Sa’ar 6-class frigate missile ship successfully intercepted a drone approaching from the east and entering the Gulf of Eilat area,” the military said.
The C-Dome uses the same interceptors as the land-based Iron Dome, which can counter shorter-range rockets and drones, according to Israeli defense contractor Rafael.
It is located opposite Israel’s multi-layered air defense array on Arrow-3, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
