Jerusalem:
Israel, the United States, Britain, France and other allies have formed a “coalition” for the first time to counter an unprecedented attack by Iran, the Israeli military said on Sunday.
Iran launched a wave of missiles and attack drones at Israel overnight from Saturday to Sunday in its first direct attack on its archenemy.
“Together we thwarted an Iranian attack… This is the first time a coalition of its kind has come together to counter the threat from Iran and its proxies in the Middle East,” military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement.
“Iran has launched more than 350 threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, rockets and suicide drones, against Israel and other countries in the region.”
Tehran’s attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli airstrike earlier this month that destroyed its consulate building in the Syrian capital and was widely blamed on Israel.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a separate statement that he had told his British and French counterparts that “Iran must pay a price.”
“I told them – now is the time to weaken the Iranian regime, designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, and impose tough sanctions on Iran’s missile program.”
