Jerusalem:
Israel said on Sunday that Hamas was taking hostages in Rafah, southern Gaza, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to launch a ground invasion despite an international outcry.
“Hamas is still holding our hostages in Gaza… We also have hostages in Rafah and we will do everything we can to bring them home,” Israeli military spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari told a news conference.
In a separate statement, the military said it was calling in “approximately two reserve brigades for operational activities on the front lines in Gaza.”
It did not specify whether the brigades would be deployed inside Gaza.
Just days ago, the army withdrew all its troops from the main southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, leaving only one brigade operating in Palestinian territory.
