Jerusalem:
Israel is fighting a “bloody and difficult war”, President Isaac Herzog said in a statement on Sunday to mark the conflict’s half-year mark.
“Tomorrow at 6:29 a.m. (0329 GMT) we mark six months since the brutal terrorist attacks and horrific massacres,” Herzog said on Saturday, referring to Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel that sparked the war.
“It’s been half a year since this crime against our brothers and sisters, against our country, against humanity. Six months into a bloody and difficult war,” the president said.
Herzog’s comments came after the military announced it had found the body of Elad Katzir, a hostage it said was murdered while in captivity in Gaza in January.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Israelis protested against right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war.
According to Israeli data, Hamas’s attack on October 7 killed 1,170 people in southern Israel, mostly civilians.
The military said Palestinian militants had taken 250 hostages, of which 129 remained in Gaza and 34 of them were presumed dead.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive against Hamas has killed at least 33,137 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Health Ministry of Hamas-controlled areas.
