Kolkata, Oct 11 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday claimed that the West Bengal Police should not have been lax in investigating the gang rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha outside a private medical college in Durgapur in West Burdwan district, like the Kolkata Police did in the RG Kar rape and murder case in August last year.
BJP’s information technology cell chief and party’s central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, issued two social media posts lambasting the West Bengal government over the issue.
Accusing the Kolkata Police of mishandling the RG Kar rape and murder investigation under the direction of the state government, Malviya had claimed that he hoped the West Bengal Police would not repeat the same pattern in the Durgapur gang rape case and instead investigate in a transparent and impartial manner.
“This repeated failure of law and order highlights a disturbing pattern under Mamata Banerjee’s administration. The West Bengal Police must ensure a transparent and impartial investigation, unlike the RG Kar rape and murder case, which was mishandled by the Kolkata Police under instructions, so that the culprits are given the harshest punishment under the law,” the BJP leader said in an ex-post.
The Kolkata Police had taken over the initial investigation of the RG Kar rape and murder, before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took charge of the investigation following the order of the Calcutta High Court.
There are allegations that incidents of tampering and alteration of evidence came to light during the initial phase of investigation by Kolkata Police.
Pointing out that a complaint has been filed against one man, Wasif Ali, and his associates in the Durgapur gangrape case, Malviya said the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal should be made accountable.
The BJP leader said, “West Bengal is not safe for women. Unless the Trinamool Congress government is held accountable, women across the state will continue to live in fear. Mamata Banerjee will have to go in 2026.”
Former state BJP president and Union Minister of State for Education Sukant Majumdar on Saturday claimed that the Durgapur incident proves that women are unsafe everywhere in West Bengal.
“Under the failed and chaotic rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women’s safety. Across the state, from villages to cities, from hospitals to homes, women everywhere are unsafe. The administration’s deliberate policy of appeasement has crippled police investigations, giving a free hand to violent criminals. Mamata Banerjee has turned West Bengal into a safe haven for rapists and criminals Is.” Majumdar said.
