iran has arrested Nobel Peace Prize award winner Narges Mohammadihis supporters said on Friday.

A foundation in his name said he had recently been detained at a memorial for a human rights lawyer found dead in disputed circumstances.

There was no immediate comment from iran While 53-year-old Mohammadi is in custody, it was not clear whether authorities will immediately send him to jail to serve the remainder of his sentence.

His supporters on Friday described him as “violently detained today by security and police forces”. He said other activists were also arrested at a ceremony held in honor of Khosrow Alikordi, a 46-year-old Iranian lawyer and human rights defender. Mashhad,

“The Narges Foundation calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained individuals who were attending a memorial ceremony to pay their respects and demonstrate solidarity,” it said in a statement. β€œHis arrest is a serious violation of fundamental freedoms.”

Alikordi was found dead in his office earlier this month, with Razavi Khorasan officials citing his death as a heart attack. However, his death along with the stringent security crackdown raised questions. More than 80 lawyers signed a statement demanding more information.

“Alikordi was a prominent figure in Iran’s community of human rights defenders,” new yorkIran-based Human Rights Center said this on Thursday. “Over the past several years, he has been repeatedly arrested, harassed, and threatened by security and judicial forces.”

Footage of the ceremony reportedly shows Mohammadi calling on the gathered crowd at the microphone without wearing a hijab or headscarf. He began chanting the name of Majidreja Rahnavard in the crowd, a man whom authorities hanged from a crane in a public execution in 2022.

Supporters had warned for months that Mohammadi was at risk of being thrown back into prison after being released in December 2024 due to medical concerns.

While that time was only three weeks, Mohammadi’s time out of prison became longer, likely due to activists and Western powers putting pressure on Iran to keep him free. She also remained out during the 12-day war in June between Iran and israel,

Mohammadi still maintains his activism in public protests and in the international media, including at one point demonstrating tehranThe infamous Evin prison, where he was held.

Mohammadi was serving a sentence of 13 years and nine months on charges of collusion against state security and propaganda against the government of Iran. He also supported the nationwide protests sparked by the death in 2022 Mahsa AminiIn which women have been seen openly disobeying the government by not wearing hijab.

His supporters say Mohammadi suffered multiple heart attacks while in prison before undergoing emergency surgery in 2022. In late 2024 her lawyer revealed that doctors had found a bone lesion that they suspected might be cancerous which was later removed.

“Mohammadi’s doctors have recently advised him to extend his medical leave for at least six months in order to undergo a thorough and regular medical checkup, including monitoring of the bone lesion removed from his leg in November, physiotherapy sessions to recover from the surgery, and specialized cardiac care,” the Free Norwegian coalition said in late February 2025.

“The medical team overseeing Mohammadi’s health has warned that his return to prison – especially under the stressful conditions of detention and without adequate medical facilities – could seriously impair his physical well-being.”

Mohammadi, an engineer by training, was jailed 13 times and convicted five times. In total, he was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison. His last imprisonment began when he was detained after attending a memorial for a man killed in nationwide protests in 2021.
