Iran challenges Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, UK were dropped in Jet in the United Nations Court in 2020

Iran on Thursday filed a challenge on the UN Aviation Body’s decision in the International Court of Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and Britain, which relates to shooting a passenger aircraft in 2020.

Among the four countries, there were citizens at Boeing 737-800, an international airline in Ukraine, who fell immediately after the takeoff from Tehran on 8 January 2020. All 176 people were killed on the board.

Three days later, Iran admitted that her army removed missiles in the air from two surfaces on the Kiev-bound plane, but said it was accidentally.

Iran is appealing for the march of the United Nations’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on the downing of Jet.

The Montreal -based ICAO decided that the jurisdiction to rule a case against Iran by four countries, which accuses Tehran of “using arms against a civilian aircraft in flight”.

Iran called the ICJ saying that the ICAO did not have the jurisdiction and to dismiss its decision.

Tehran told the ICJ in his application that his army had “unknowingly” dropped by flight PS752 “unknowingly and due to human error”.

Iran told the court, “Iran’s army, contrary to the wrong military rules, had false and targeted the flight by two missiles without receiving the authority.”

Tehran said that its army “period of increased military alert … was in anticipation of a possible attack by American military forces”.

The tension between Iran and the United States was growing when the airliner was shot.

Iranian air defense was on a high warning for an American reversal after removing missiles at a military base in Iraq used by the US Army.

Demand for ‘accountability’

The UK Foreign Ministry welcomed the ICAO’s march decision, stating that it took the countries “a step close to catch Iran for illegal downing of the aircraft”.

The UK ministry said, “Now we will move forward in the next phase against Iran in Iran in the next phase …. We are committed to demanding justice, transparency and accountability for 176 innocent victims and their families.”

In a separate case, four countries dragged Iran before ICJ in 2023, asked Tehran to give Tehran “full compensation” to the families.

In 2020, Iran offered each of the afflicted families to pay “$ 150,000 or equivalent for euro”.

Ukrainian and Canadian officials strongly criticized the announcement, stating that compensation should not be settled through unilateral announcements.

The ICJ was established after World War II to rule the disputes between the UN member states.
