New Delhi, October 11 (IANS) A senior Haryana Police officer Y. Puran Kumar’s alleged suicide remained in political focus on Saturday with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi expressing condolences to the family and criticizing the “prejudicial and biased attitude of those in power”.
In a letter addressed to the police officer’s wife, the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) president said, “The news of the tragic death of your husband and senior IPS officer, Shri Y. Puran Kumar, in a tragic accident is shocking and deeply saddened. My heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family at this difficult time.
The wife of an IPS officer, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer in Haryana, has accused top officials of running a sustained campaign of caste-based harassment and mental torture against her husband.
Sonia Gandhi said in her letter in Hindi, “Y. Puran Kumar’s demise will remind us that even today the prejudiced and biased attitude of those in power deprives even the senior-most officials of social justice. I and millions of our countrymen stand with you on this path of justice.”
“I pray to God to grant you patience, courage and strength in this difficult situation,” the CPP chairman said.
Earlier reacting to the developments related to the suicide, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati drew attention to the grief and outrage across the country, especially among the Dalit and Bahujan communities, over the incident.
In a post on X, he expressed concern over the incident, calling it a national shame and a reflection of the caste-based discrimination still prevalent in India’s administrative systems.
Y. Puran Kumar, who held the post of Inspector General, reportedly died by suicide at his residence in Chandigarh on October 7. A “last note” left by him sparked a “controversy” over his alleged “caste-based harassment” by senior colleagues.
