IOA disbands wrestling ad hoc committee, WFI takes over wrestling news

The Indian Olympic Association on Monday dissolved its ad hoc committee on wrestling, saying there was “no longer a need” to organize wrestling after the ban on the country was lifted and the association has now taken full administrative control. The IOA said the decision was also taken to successfully conduct next month’s Olympic qualifying trials, which the group is conducting in partnership with the WFI.

The ad hoc committee was formed in December last year after the Sports Ministry suspended the WFI of India (WFI) and global governing body United World Wrestling imposed a suspension on the federation. Will receive a cardiotonic drug. Canceled in February.

“The decision to dissolve the ad hoc committee comes in view of the lifting of the ban on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by the World Wrestling Federation (UWW) and the successful completion of selection trials by the ad hoc committee appointed by the International Wrestling Federation.” As per the Delhi High Court instructions,” the IOA order issued on March 10 said.

The ad hoc committee, chaired by Bhupender Singh Bajwa, was constituted on December 23 after the newly elected WFI led by Sanjay Singh allegedly flouted its own rules.

Earlier this month, the group organized the selection of teams for next month’s Asian Championships and Asian Olympic qualifiers in Kyrgyzstan.

Protesting pair Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia participated in the trials, with the former qualifying for the Olympic qualifiers in the 50kg category.

Following the successful completion of trials, control of the sport was handed over to the WFI.

The IOA directed the WFI to appoint a “safeguarding committee officer” to address sexual harassment issues and other issues such as compliance with the rules.

“…as directed by the UWW, WFI is required to appoint a Safeguarding Committee/Officer at the earliest possible opportunity to address issues of abuse and harassment and ensure compliance with all rules, regulations and guidelines laid down by the UWW and other relevant authorities,” the IOA letter added.

“Furthermore, the Badminton World Federation is required to conduct the election of the Athletes Committee within the stipulated time in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.

“This step is critical to promote athlete representation and participation in the WFI decision-making process.”
