Fire services have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire that caused the damage Exeter CityStadium all night long.

Firefighters were called to the St James’s Park fire just after 10pm on Wednesday, with the fire extinguished by midnight and ventilation fans used to remove the huge plume of smoke.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said the fire started in an electrical unit at the stadium before spreading to a nearby portacabin. Over 60 percent of the portacabin was damaged, with electrical cabinets and electrical intakes also affected.

Three crews were initially dispatched to the scene, while two others were sent because the fire was “in danger of spreading to one stand”.

Exeter City said that “a small area of ​​the stadium was damaged”. There is no report of anyone being injured.

A club statement on Thursday morning said: “The fire is understood to have started at the stadium on the corner of St James’s Road and Well Street and has caused damage to the temporary building which houses the stadium’s control room.

“We will assess the damage today and update when we have more information.

“Thank you to members of the public who reported the incident and to the prompt response of firefighters who brought the fire under control and prevented further damage.”

Fire brigade teams remained present at the incident site till Thursday morning.
