chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has confirmed that leading goalscorer hannah hampton She will be out for “a few weeks” with a quad injury, a significant blow as the race for the Women’s Super League title heats up.
Hampton, who recently missed Champions League The victory over St. Pölten, with Livia Peng deputizing, faces an uncertain return before the end of the year.
“Hannah won’t be here, she’s got a quad injury,” Bompastor said ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool.
“She’ll be out for a few weeks so we’ll see if we can see her before the end of the year, but I’m not sure.”
It is the latest blow for Hampton after a difficult few weeks following the release of the autobiography of former England teammate Mary Earps, who branded him “disruptive” and “untrustworthy”.
Hampton replaced Earps as the Lionesses’ No.1 ahead of this summer’s Euros, when she played a major role in England’s title defence.
Earps has remained silent since the release of her explosive new book, which also details a disagreement with national team manager Sarina Wiegman over goalkeeper selection. After the book was published, Bompastor defended Hampton, saying that his player had shown “class” in the matter.
The Blues are currently just one point behind league leaders Manchester City, who are set to face rivals Manchester United on Saturday.
Bompastre reflected on the increasing competition within the WSL, acknowledging last season’s perception of dominance but insisting that the challenge has always been present.
“The league here is really competitive, even though I understand from your point of view last season, maybe the competition wasn’t that high because we were in a really strong position, 12 points ahead of Arsenal,” he explained.
“But for us, it always felt like every weekend was harder and the competition was higher, so nothing changes this season.”
Bompastor said: “We know there are a lot of teams competing for the title in this league, the title race has been really tough and Man City are top of the table now, but it doesn’t change anything for us.
“We are still in the early stages of the season, we know what we want to achieve and we keep that in mind. We are focused and still in good shape.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Rene Slagers addressed the Gunners’ disappointing Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, where they squandered a two-goal lead and lost 3-2.
Following the 1-1 WSL draw with Chelsea, the slugger expressed his team’s determination to bounce back in the upcoming North London derby against Tottenham.
Slagers commented, “If we look at where the team was after Chelsea, it’s positive, very disappointing of course, but there was a real belief and a lot of good things in our performance.”
“You look at the first half against Bayern, we did a lot of really good things, but of course we are not happy with the second half – how we don’t manage it.”
He added: “It’s not good enough, really disappointing and we’ve collectively accepted that. Everyone has taken responsibility so that’s good. We had a really good session with a lot of energy on the field today, so the players will use that as fuel in the North London derby.”
