At least 54 people have been injured in a series of explosions at a mosque in the Indonesian capital. jakarta During Friday prayers, police officials said.
The mosque is part of a high school complex in the Kelapa Gading area, and while police have said the cause of the blasts is being investigated, they have described the mosque as a “crime scene”.
The country’s deputy House speaker Sufmi Dasko Ahmed visited the injured in hospital and said the suspected “perpetrator” was about 17 years old and was currently undergoing surgery.
Jakarta city police chief Asep Edi Suhairi said people injured in the blasts were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, including several burns.
Initial visuals of the incident show a mosque painted green with a line of shoes outside and the premises cordoned off with police tape. There were no immediate signs of damage to the exterior.
“We have taken several steps such as investigating the crime scene, setting up police lines and disinfecting the area,” Mr Suheri said, speaking to reporters outside the mosque.
Deputy Chief Security Minister Lodewijk Fridrich said at least two explosions had been confirmed at the mosque, according to Indonesian state news agency Antara.
The mosque complex is located on land largely owned by the Navy in a crowded area of North Jakarta, which is home to many military personnel and retired officers.
