Dense fog in northern parts of India, especially Delhi, has adversely affected flight operations, forcing passengers to wait for hours at airports.

Earlier, a video went viral on Twitter in which passengers can be seen eating and sitting at the Mumbai airport at night after a Delhi-bound IndiGo flight was diverted to the city.

On Sunday, passengers boarded flight number 6E 2195 from Goa to Delhi. However, due to dense fog at Delhi airport, the flight was diverted to Mumbai.

“We are aware of the incident involving IndiGo flight 6E2195 from Goa to Delhi on January 14, 2024. The flight was diverted to Mumbai due to low visibility conditions in Delhi. We sincerely apologize to our customers and are currently investigating the incident,” IndiGo said in a statement.

According to aviation website Flightradar24, at least 313 flights departing from Delhi were delayed and 82 flights were canceled on Monday.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport said, “IndiGo 6E 2195 (Goa to Delhi) was diverted due to adverse weather conditions. Since the flight was already delayed in Goa, the passengers became angry and walked out of the plane as soon as the stairs were connected. As the passengers refused to board the airline coaches and proceed towards the terminal building, the airport operators in coordination with the CISF QRT cordoned off the passengers in the security area. The passengers were kept under strict surveillance of airline officials and security until further action is taken.

Publish flight delay information in real time, inform passengers: DGCA issues SOP to airlines

In view of massive flight cancellations and delays at various airports including Delhi Airport due to fog and adverse weather conditions, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DCGA) issued a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for airlines.

The aviation watchdog said airlines should publish accurate real-time information regarding delays to their flights. Airline staff at airports should have proper sensitization to properly communicate and constantly guide and inform passengers about flight delays.

As per the SOP, airlines will be required to publish accurate real-time information regarding delays in their flights, which will be published on the respective website of the airline and advance notice will be given to the affected passengers through SMS/Whatsapp and email.

Airlines have also been asked to display updated information regarding flight delays to passengers waiting at airports.
