Over 250 IndiGo flights were expected to be canceled on Thursday (December 4) as the airline grappled with crew shortage, technical and operational challenges. Thousands of passengers remained stranded at airports, with many waiting for up to 12 hours to board a plane to their destination.

33 outbound IndiGo flights from Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) are expected to be cancelled. Similarly, 35 flights arriving during the day are also likely to be cancelled, the report said.

Indigo canceled 19 flights from Hyderabad on December 3.

A flyer told PTI, “There is complete chaos at Hyderabad airport today – flights delayed by more than 12 hours. To not give space, they kept pushing “just 2 more hours” every time till 12 hours. Same excuse: crew arriving soon. Unacceptable.”

The situation is no different at other airports in the country. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport said 73 IndiGo flights were canceled on December 4. At least 30 IndiGo departures (both domestic and international) were canceled at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) since morning.

There was chaos in the morning at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as at least 85 flights were cancelled.

KIA PRO told ANI, “For the past two days, thousands of passengers have been caused severe inconvenience due to major disruption in flight operations at KIA, Terminal-1. Indigo Airlines has been the most affected, with flights delayed by several hours due to technical problems and crew shortage. Many passengers were forced to spend the night at the airport. Frequent delays and cancellations have led to overcrowding at Terminal 1. Due to lack of seating, many passengers have been forced to stay on the floor. Elderly passengers and families with children faced a lot of difficulties, according to sources, the re-imposition of FDTL (Flight Duty Limit) rules by IndiGo and reduction in crew availability has affected IndiGo’s services not only in Bengaluru but across the country.

Airport sources told Reuters that at least 150 flights were canceled on December 3 and dozens of others were delayed.

Aviation watchdog DGCA said it is investigating the IndiGo flight disruptions and has asked the airline to submit the reasons for the current situation as well as plans to minimize flight cancellations and delays.

As part of the calibrated adjustments announced by IndiGo, flights will be canceled and rescheduled, PTI quoted sources as saying.

The airline said a “multitude of unexpected operational challenges” had significantly disrupted its operations across the network for the past two days, and apologized to passengers for the inconvenience. The challenges included “minor technical glitches, schedule changes related to the winter season, adverse weather conditions, increased congestion in the aviation system and the implementation of updated crew rostering rules (flight duty time limitations) that had a negative impact on our operations that was not possible to anticipate,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the latest official data, IndiGo, which is known for its punctuality, recorded an On Time Performance (OTP) score of 35% on December 2.
