IndiGo cuts 400-500 flights per day to restore stability; More than 8,500 bags returned to passengers

IndiGo airline on Tuesday (December 9) said it has cut 400-500 flights to achieve complete stability in the schedule. Instead of 2300 flights, the airline will operate 1800-1900 flights daily, the airline said.

The domestic carrier said passengers will be informed about the cancellation 72 hours in advance, if their flight is among the 400-500 flights cancelled.

Today it said the airline’s operations are now “fully stable” after several days of serious flight disruptions that prevented thousands of passengers from flying and a regulatory investigation began. “We have let you down… and we are sorry,” he said in a video address. He said IndiGo is “back on its feet” with performance normalizing on time.

The airline said more than 8,500 bags will be distributed to customers by 7 pm today. Around 800 bags are left behind, where the contact details entered in the PNR are not available or are not being responded to. For this, teams are trying to connect with the passengers. All customer bags have been delivered and cleared from 49 of our 94 domestic stations, the airline said.

Piles of luggage were seen at airports as hundreds of IndiGo flights were disrupted and cancelled.

Sources said all flights published on the website will be scheduled to operate.

On December 9, Indigo has canceled 422 flights from six metro airports. Of the 422 flights cancelled, 152 flights were canceled at Delhi airport, 121 at Bengaluru airport, 58 at Hyderabad, 41 at Mumbai and over 50 at Chennai airport.

Earlier in the day, the government has announced a 5% reduction in the number of IndiGo flights during the winter schedule. “IndiGo has increased its departures by 9.66% in relation to Winter Schedule 24 (WS24) and by 6.05% in relation to Summer Schedule 25 (SS25). However, the airline has not demonstrated the ability to operate these schedules efficiently. Therefore, it has been directed to reduce schedules by 5% across all sectors, especially on high-demand, high-frequency flights, and by IndiGo To avoid single-flight operations on a sector,” the DGCA said in its order.

IndiGo is operating more than 2,200 daily flights under the airline’s winter schedule for 2025-26, which began in the last week of October and will run till the end of March 2026.
