In just over a month, India will hope to win the 2024 T20 World Cup and end their more than a decade-long ICC trophy drought. They won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 but surprisingly never won another one after that. On April 30, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be played in the USA and West Indies in June.

Shaft: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

Eight players from India’s T20 WC 2022 squad have again been included in this year’s selection. They are Rohit, Kohli, Suryakumar, Pant, Pandya, Axar, Chahal and Arshdeep.

Bumrah was originally named in the squad for 2022 but was replaced by Mohammed Shami.

Will this year’s Indian team go beyond the Men in Blue semi-finals in 2022? Let’s take a look at the form of all the players in the 20-over format last year.

Rohit Sharma(c)
Indian captain Rohit Sharma will lead India in the T20 WC 2024. The right-handed batsman did not play any T20I matches in 2023, but was named captain for the T20I series against Afghanistan in early 2024.

After consecutive ducks in the series, Rohit scored an unbeaten 121 in the final T20I in Bangalore. He continued his top-notch performance in IPL 2024 and scored 315 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 158.29.

Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain)
All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been in and out of the Indian team for the last one year due to injury concerns.

Pandya has played five T20 matches since IPL 2023, in which he scored only 77 runs at an average strike rate of 110. He took four wickets in those matches at an economy of 8.40.

The Mumbai Indians captain had an ordinary 2024 IPL season as he managed to score only 197 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 150.38. He has also taken six wickets with the ball so far.

Yashasvi Jaiswal
Explosive opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal made his T20I debut against West Indies in August 2023 and has since scored 502 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 161.93.

After some low scores in the first half of IPL 2024, Jaiswal scored a brilliant century against Mumbai. Overall, the left-handed batsman has scored 249 runs in nine matches in IPL 2024.

Virat Kohli
India’s star batsman Virat Kohli has been the top scorer (1,141 runs) for India in the T20 World Cup. Since his forgettable exit from the semi-finals of the T20 WC 2022, Kohli has played only two T20Is and managed to score 29 runs.

However, the former Indian captain is currently the Orange Cap holder in IPL 2024, having scored 500 runs in 10 matches at an average of 71.43.

Suryakumar Yadav
World No. 1 T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav is the backbone of Team India in the 20-over format. Since IPL 2023, the hard-hitter has scored 466 T20I runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 158.

The Mumbai Indians batsman has had an up-and-down performance in the ongoing IPL 2024, scoring only 176 runs in seven innings at an average of 25.14.

Rishabh Pant (wk)
Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant made a comeback in IPL 2024 after surviving a serious car accident in December 2022.

Since his return, the left-handed batsman has scored 398 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 158.56.

Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper)
Sanju Samson had a disappointing tour of West Indies in 2023, where he could score only 73 runs at an average of 24.3 in five matches. This year, Samson played only one T20I where he was out for a duck on one ball against Afghanistan.

However, the Rajasthan Royals captain has scored the most runs in IPL 2024 with 385 runs in nine matches at an average of 161.08.

Chahal has been performing brilliantly this IPL season and has taken 13 wickets in nine matches and has earned his place in India’s T20 team.

Arshdeep Singh
Young left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has performed well with the ball for India on many occasions. The fast bowler has taken 21 T20I wickets at an economy of 8.97 in 18 innings since IPL 2023.
