‘India’s maritime industry contributes 60% to GDP’: Amit Shah at India Maritime Week

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday inaugurated the fourth edition of India Maritime Week at NESCO Exhibition Center in Mumbai. The five-day event organized by the Ports Ministry, shipping And the completion of the waterway in partnership with the Indian Ports Association will take place on October 31.

“India’s maritime industry serves as an important bridge between the Global South and international trade,” Shah said during the inauguration. Shah highlighted India’s strong maritime position, saying it can play a major role in the economy by contributing about 60% to India’s GDP.

He said the country has more than 11,000 kilometers of coastline and 13 coastal states and union territories. Shah It is mentioned that India has 23.7 lakh square km of Exclusive Economic Zones and Special Economic Zones which attract investors and manufacturers from all over the world.

“With about 800 million people living in coastal areas, almost half of India’s population depends directly or indirectly on maritime activities,” he said.

He said that 28 countries of the Indian Ocean region together account for about 12% of global exports. He said, “Today two-thirds of global trade takes place through the Indo-Pacific sea route and 90% of India’s trade also takes place through the sea route.”

“Through a maritime summit, we are opening up this full potential to global investors and champions of the global maritime industry,” he said.

Shah He also talked about the upcoming Wadhawan Port project in Maharashtra and said that it will be among the top ten ports of the world in future.

He inaugurated the India Maritime Week 2025 in the presence of Union Minister Sarbanada Sonowal and Shantanu Thakur. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CMs Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, Goa CM Pramod Sawant, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, and Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel were present on the occasion.

Representatives and ministers of 11 countries will be seen participating in this event. The main goal of the event is to make India a global leader in ‘Blue Economy’.

The event is expected to attract over 1 lakh participants from 85 countries, with 500 companies showcasing their products and technologies and 350 speakers sharing ideas across various sectors of the maritime industry.
