The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said several Indians working as support staff in the Russian Army were discharged following India’s demand.
It said India is committed to actively pursuing all relevant matters with the Russian authorities for the early release of Indian nationals from the Russian military as a “top priority”.
According to media reports, many Indians are working as security assistants in the Russian army and were also forced to fight alongside Russian troops in some areas of Russia’s border with Ukraine.
“We have seen some incorrect reports in the media regarding Indians seeking help from the Russian Army for their release,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
“Each such matter brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow has been strongly taken up with the Russian authorities and the matters brought to the attention of the Ministry have been taken up with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi,” it said.
“As a result, a number of Indians have already been discharged,” the Ministry of External Affairs said. Last week, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said New Delhi is in touch with Moscow for early release of Indians working as support staff in the Russian military and urged its citizens to stay away from the conflict zone in Ukraine. He had said, “We urge all Indian citizens to take appropriate precautions and stay away from this conflict.”
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier urged the MEA to rescue the Indians.
