New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) The Indian Navy has signed an MoU with IIT Delhi to build subject matter expertise in crew-centric warship design, it said on Friday.
“The partnership brings a structured, process-based approach to improving ship liveability, enabling the Indian Navy to develop indigenous crew-centric standards and reduce dependence on external benchmarks,” the MoU signed on October 16 said.
The MoU was signed by Rear Admiral Arvind Rawal, Assistant Chief of Material (Dockyard and Refit), Indian Navy, and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi. Under the MoU, researchers from the Department of Design, IIT Delhi will conduct research on the safety, efficiency and habitability of various ongoing and future new construction projects and provide inputs in ship design.
“The Indian Navy and IIT Delhi will work towards the broader objective of improving the quality of life (QoL) onboard Indian Naval ships, which can also be extended to the merchant marine and any other Indian ethnicity-based habitability requirement,” IIT Delhi said in its press note.
The institute will study the existing ship designs by the Indian Navy and conduct a comparative analysis of their designs with respect to safety, user experience, comfort and other parameters as well as international standards.
Speaking about the MoU with IIT Delhi, RADM Arvind Rawal, Assistant Chief of Materiel (Dockyard & Refit), Indian Navy, said, “This MoU is an important step in our common endeavor to make Indian warships not only formidable in combat but also exemplary in terms of crew comfort, efficiency and livability. Through this partnership, we will partner with the country’s premier shipbuilders for content creation Joining hands with one of the educational institutions. “This initiative introduces a scientific, process-based approach to habitable living, bringing the disciplines of ergonomics, human factors and design optimization into naval architecture,” he said.
Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, “We are delighted to work with the Indian Navy to improve the comfort conditions for its naval officers and crew using the latest scientific design equipment and technologies. This MoU will broaden IIT Delhi’s existing relationship with the Navy in postgraduate programs in underwater electronics and naval construction.”
