Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams ended their challenge at the ongoing World Team Table Tennis Championships after defeats to South Korea and Chinese Taipei respectively on Wednesday. Reaching the quarter-finals would have ensured Olympic 2024 quota for both the Indian teams, but the dream of achieving direct qualification through this tournament is over. However, based on their world ranking at the end of the month, India can still achieve their Paris 2024 dream. The men’s team was defeated by South Korea 3-0.

Harmeet Desai starts for India against Jang Woojin. However, South Korea defeated the rival Indians in three consecutive sets 12-10, 13-11 and 11-7 to take the score to 1-0.

Lim Jonghoon won 3-1 against India’s multiple Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medalist Achanta Sharath Kamal (11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4) to give the hosts a 2- Moved beyond 0.

The onus was on Sathiyan Gnanasekaran to turn things in India’s favour, but he lost 3-0 to Lee Sang Su (11-5, 11-8, 11-2).

On the other hand, the Indian women’s team had to face defeat by 1-3 against Chinese Taipei.

Manika Batra started well for India with a thrilling 3-2 win over Chen Tzu-yu (11-8, 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9). India got 1-0 lead in the match.

However, Sreeja Akula lost to Chen I-Ching 3-0 (6-11, 9-11, 5-11) in the second match and the score remained equal. South Korea took the lead when Ayhika Mukherjee lost to Lee Yu-jun 3-1 (10-12, 13-15, 11-9, 2-11).

South Korea won when Chen I-ching defeated Manika Batra 3-1 (10-12, 11-5, 9-11, 5-11), earning a place in the quarter-finals.

The Indian men’s and women’s teams on Wednesday secured their places in the Round of 16 stage of the ongoing World Team Table Tennis Championships in Busan, South Korea.

First, it was the Indian women’s team that defeated Italy 3-0.

Later during the day, the men’s team also defeated Kazakhstan 3–2 and joined their women’s counterparts in the round of 16.
