New Delhi, Oct 26 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Odisha’s famous Koraput coffee during the 127th episode of his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ and said India’s coffee is “the best coffee – made in India and loved by the world”.
The Prime Minister said, “You all know about my association with tea, but today I thought why not discuss coffee in ‘Mann Ki Baat’! You may remember that last year we had talked about Araku coffee in ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Some time back, many people of Odisha had also shared their feelings with me about Koraput coffee. They had written to me saying that Koraput coffee should also be discussed in ‘Mann Ki Baat’. Needed.”
PM Modi said he was told that Koraput coffee not only has a unique and rich taste, but also plays an important role in transforming lives in the region.
He said, “There are people in Koraput who are cultivating coffee because of their passion. They were doing good jobs in the corporate world… but they liked coffee so much that they came into this field and are now working in it successfully. There are also many women in whose lives coffee has brought a pleasant change.”
The Prime Minister praised the empowerment of women and the socio-economic transformation brought about by coffee farming in Koraput.
“They have achieved both respect and prosperity through coffee. It is rightly said: Koraput coffee is truly delicious! It is truly the pride of Odisha,” he said, adding a line roughly translated from Odia.
Highlighting the diverse coffee culture of India, he said that Indian coffee is gaining global popularity.
“Be it Chikmagalur, Coorg and Hassan in Karnataka; the regions of Pulani, Shevaroy, Nilgiri and Annamalai in Tamil Nadu; the Biligiri region on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border; or the regions of Wayanad, Travancore and Malabar in Kerala – the diversity of Indian coffee is truly remarkable,” he said.
He further said that coffee cultivation is also increasing in the North-East, which is increasing the recognition of Indian coffee across the world.
He said, “Our North-East is also making progress in coffee cultivation. This is further strengthening the identity of Indian coffee across the world – this is why coffee lovers say: India coffee is coffee at its finest. It is made in India and loved across the world.”
