New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) In an amazing display of courage, skill and presence of mind, Constable (Ambulance Assistant) Sunil of 456 Field Hospital saved the life of an eight-month-old infant who suffered a sudden medical emergency aboard the Rajdhani Express en route to Dibrugarh.
On October 13, 2025, at around 1630 hours, while traveling in S4 compartment, an infant reportedly suddenly developed respiratory distress and became unresponsive, causing panic among the passengers.
The child’s mother fainted due to shock, causing chaos in the compartment.
Amidst the chaos, constable Sunil, who was returning from leave and was in the same coach, quickly came inside.
Displaying extraordinary composure, he immediately assessed the child’s condition, finding no pulse or respiration.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, he laid the child on a flat surface and began pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using a two-finger chest compression technique with mouth-to-mouth breathing.
After about two cycles of CPR, the baby began showing signs of life – a moment of relief and hope for the distressed family and fellow passengers.
Without any delay, Constable Sunil coordinated with the train staff and Railway Police to ensure medical evacuation to Rangia station for continuous care of the infant.
This incident highlights the important role of trained medical personnel even outside clinical settings.
A defense official said, “Self Sunil’s timely, professional and selfless actions undoubtedly prevented a potential tragedy and provided reassurance to the many people aboard the ship.”
“Later he ensured coordination with the train staff and railway police for further evacuation of the infant and medical management at Rangia station,” the official said.
Throughout the entire incident, Constable (Embt. Assistant) Sunil displayed exceptional medical proficiency, quick judgment and high sense of duty.
