The Indian Army said it has strengthened its preparedness for long-term military operations, with more than 90% of its ammunition requirements now being met from indigenous sources.

This shift marks a significant reduction in reliance on imports and legacy production systems that previously exposed supply chains to global disruptions. The Indian Army said ammunition and logistics are critical to combat endurance and self-reliance in these areas has been made a core element of the Army’s preparedness strategy.

According to the Army, about 200 types of ammunition and precision munitions are in service in its weapon systems. Through continuous policy reforms and engagement with domestic industry, more than 90% of these variants have been indigenised, while the remaining categories are under development with the support of defense research agencies, public sector units and private manufacturers.

Over the last four to five years, procurement processes have been reworked to encourage competition and diversify suppliers. The Indian Army said an order pipeline of about ₹16,000 crore has been created under the Make in India initiative, while ammunition supply orders worth about ₹26,000 crore have been placed with indigenous manufacturers in the last three years.

The next phase will focus on strengthening the domestic raw material supply chain for key inputs such as propellants and fuses, modernizing manufacturing infrastructure, accelerating technology transfer and enforcing strict quality standards.

By initiating ammunition production in indigenous capacity, the Indian Army said it is enhancing operational endurance and ensuring continuous readiness in an evolving security environment.
