The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held elections on Tuesday to fill vacancies in its 17 subsidiary bodies. These vacancies are filled by acclamation elections, secret ballots and nominations.

India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations stated on the 10th: “Today, India achieved a major victory at the United Nations, successfully re-elected the International Narcotics Control Commission for the term from 2025 to 2030, and obtained seats in several key United Nations agencies.”

He pointed out that India received the highest number of votes among all elected members of the Council. “Well done,” he said, praising the teams at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Ministry of External Affairs.

India received 41 votes out of the 53 voting member states of the Economic and Social Council, the highest among all winning member states. Parvadia secured a convincing victory in the hard-fought election with 41 votes, with the candidate finishing second with 30 votes.

There are 24 candidates competing for 5 seats in this election, and the competition is very fierce.

“The Permanent Mission of India thanks all member states for their valuable support and confidence placed in the Indian nominee,” the mission said in a press release.

Mr. Parvadia has served as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board since 2015. In May 2019, she was re-elected by the Council for a five-year term from 2020 to 2025. She served as President of the Board from 2021 to 2022.

Mr. Parvadia was born in 1954 and has worked for the Indian government for 35 years, holding various senior positions in the Indian Revenue Service, including Narcotics Commissioner, Central Bureau of Narcotics, India (2006-2012); Legal Affairs Commissioner (2001) -2005) and Chief Vigilance Officer, Power Finance Corporation (1996-2001), among others.

The Board was established in 1968 as an independent quasi-judicial oversight body for the implementation of the United Nations international drug control conventions.

It consists of 13 members, elected by the Economic and Social Council, who serve in their personal capacity rather than as government representatives. Three members with medical, pharmacological or pharmaceutical experience are selected from a list of persons nominated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and 10 members are selected from a list of persons nominated by governments.

According to information on its website about its mandate, INCB strives to work with Governments to ensure that adequate supplies of drugs are available for medical and scientific purposes and that diversion of drugs from legitimate sources into illicit channels does not occur.

The Board also monitors the control of Governments over chemicals used in the illicit manufacture of drugs and assists them in preventing the diversion of these chemicals into illicit trafficking.

The Economic and Social Council, composed of 54 members, is one of the six main organs of the United Nations and is responsible for dealing with economic, social, cultural and health affairs, as well as human rights and fundamental freedoms.
