Washington:
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told lawmakers on Wednesday that the India-US agreement to jointly produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force is revolutionary.
The landmark agreement was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic official state visit to the United States in June last year. General Electric has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hindustan Aeronautics to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force.
Austin told the House Appropriations subcommittee that the United States has a “good relationship” with India.
“We have recently enabled India to produce jet weapons, Indian jet engines. This is revolutionary. This will provide them with great capabilities. We are also working with India to produce armored vehicles,” he said.
“So, all of these things, when you add them up, it’s probably more than we’ve seen happen in this area in a very long time,” Austin said.
