Shortly after US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on India, in its statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India was being wrongly targeted for oil imports from Russia, while countries like China and Turkey continued to do the same.
In its statement, the MEA said, “The United States has targeted India’s oil imports from Russia in recent times. We have already clarified our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and have been done with the overall objective of ensuring energy security of 1.4 billion people in India.”
“Therefore it is very unfortunate that America should opt for additional tariffs on India for those tasks that many other countries are also taking in their national interest. We are repeating that these tasks are inappropriate, unfair and unfair. India will take all the tasks necessary to protect their national interests,” the MEA said.
The clear indication of Mea is towards countries like China and Türkiye continue to continue a large percentage of crude oil or oil products from Russia.
According to data from the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air for June 2025, China has bought 47%of Russia’s crude exports, followed by India (38%), European Union (6%), and Turkes (6%). Turkas are the largest buyer of oil products and bought 26%of Russia’s oil product exports, followed by China (13%) and Brazil (12%).
The European Union was LNG, the largest buyer from Russia, which was buying 51%LNG exports from the country, followed by China (21%) and Japan (18%).
The European Union was also the largest buyer of Russia’s pipeline gas, with 37%purchase, followed by China (30%) and Turkas (27%).
Statistics show that India in its latest tariff order is appropriate in advancing the case of incorrectly targeted by the US government.
On Wednesday, the US government slapped 25 percent of an additional tariff on imports from India in response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.
According to the order issued by the White House, Trump cited matters of national security and foreign policy concerns, as well as to increase other relevant trade laws, claiming that India’s imports, directly or indirectly, are “unusual and extraordinary threats” to the United States.
Following the order, the total tariff on Indian goods will be 50 percent. While the initial duties become effective on August 7, the additional levy will become effective after 21 days and will be imposed on all Indian goods imported in the US, in addition to completion of goods or specific discounts already.
The executive order also allows for amendments based on changing circumstances, including other countries a potential vengeance or steps taken by Russia or India to address the national emergency.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said a few hours after mentioning the increase in tariff on India, he said that he would increase the tariff imposed on imports at the current rate of 25 percent from India in the next 24 hours due to the continuous purchase of New Delhi.
“They are fueling the war machine, and if they are going to do so, I am not going to be happy,” Trump told CNBC in an interview, as Reuters said.
On Monday, Trump announced that the United States would “enhance the tariff to a large extent” to buy a large amount of Russian oil. He claimed that most of this oil is being sold for huge profits in the open market.
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “India is not only buying Russian oil on a large scale, for most of the oil purchased, selling it in the open market for big profits.
