The last date for filing income tax returns for assessment year 2025-26 has been extended.
The last date is originally set on 31 July 2025, now it has been extended to September 15, 2025.
The Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT) said in a statement on Tuesday, “To facilitate a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers, it has been decided that the fixed date for filing ITRS, originally on 31 July, 2025, has been extended to 15 September, 2025.”
A formal notification to this effect is being issued separately.
According to CBDT, this detail is expected to reduce the concerns raised by the stakeholders and provide sufficient time to comply, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process.
The ITRs notified for AY 2025-26 have made structural and material amendments aimed at simplifying compliance, increasing transparency and enabling accurate reporting.
CBDT stated that these changes require additional time for system development, integration and testing of related utilities.
In view of the comprehensive changes introduced in the notified ITR and the readiness of the system and the time required for the time required for the Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities, CBDT has decided to expand the fixed date for filing returns.
On 13 February, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Citraman demanded a change in the Lok Sabha to replace the current Income Tax Act, 1961 and introduce changes that affect the various categories of taxpayers including individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations.
