If I was colorado second. Among the state Jena Griswold, I will not sleep recently after receiving demand from Trump’s DOJ to turn on the “all records” related to the 2024 election.
I should clarify that everyone is innocent until he is guilty, but it does not feel good for colorado!
Comprehensive demand is being called completely unprecedented:
New: Polling officials say that they have never seen the demand like the Trump justice department sent to Colorado last month. https://t.co/4sbb0gh9ui

We know everything here till now:
DOJ Colorado demands election data: On May 12, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) asked for the State Secretary of Colorado All Records related to the federal elections of 2024 and any remaining from 2020 – an unusually comprehensive request.
Concern about scope: Election officials and legal experts described the request with “unprecedented” and widely described widely with voter registration, ballot and voting equipment data.
Possible link for Tina Peters case: There is some suspicion that the request is associated with the prosecution of Tina Peters, a Trump associate jailed for unauthorized access to polling equipment. Trump has called him a “innocent political prisoner” and urged him for DOJ intervention.
Griswold criticizes request: Colorado Secretary State Secretary Jena Griswold, a Democrat, called the DOJ letter a threat to democracy and accused the DOJ of Trump-era of making the federal government a weapon.
DOJ under new leadership: The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is now led by Harmeet Dhillon, a former legal advisor of the Trump Abhiyan, who was confirmed in April 2025. The division has focused on voter fraud enforcement with voting rights.
Request followed Trump Executive Order: Trump signed an executive order of March 25, in which more aggressive inspection of voter rolls and data-sharing between federal agencies and states was made mandatory.
RNC and Dhilan Law Group send parallel requests: Around the same time, Dhillon Law Group – Former Firm – Dhillon’s former firm – sent equal voter data requests to 48 states by the Republican National Committee (RNC), who question the potential overlap with government efforts.
Other states on alert: Officials of states like New Mexico are worried that they will soon face similar data demands. Many people express concern about re -writing the 2020 election and what information can be used.
DOJ response and legal status: DOJ has refused to issue a complaint triggering the request, but claims that it is working within the federal law and privacy guidelines.
Colorado replies: The state has already sent publicly available voter files and history datasets, but it is not clear that the DOJ considers it enough.

local Deenver7 Surprisingly reports that all records have been destroyed by the 2020 election:
The US Department of Justice is demanding that Colorado Secretary Jena Griswold replaced the “all records” related to the federal elections of 2024, a request called several election experts unprecedented.
Denver7 is working to find out why Doj Records Records. Election leaders across the state say that they are still trying to make an understanding of the request.
“Okay, this is definitely an unusual request,” said Matt Crane, Executive Director of the Colorado County Clerk Association. “I have been election here in Colorado for 25 years. I do not remember any request from the federal government that it is expanding.”
The Crane said that the request of the DOJ for the record is so broad, it can mean many things.
“This voter registration information, voter voting information can be anything. It can be information from the voting system access and activity log from inside the voting system software. This can be a real ballot,” said the crane.
In its letter to the state, which NPR received, DOJ said that it had received a complaint about Colorado’s election record retention.
The DOJ also asked the state secretary’s office to maintain records from the 2020 election. According to the crane, the Colorado law requires maintaining election records for 25 months, which is three months more than the 22 months required under the federal law. In any way, he said that most of the 2020 election records have probably gone.
“Most, if not all, the counties have now destroyed all those records from the 2020 election,” the Crane said. “Now, definitely from the 2024 election, the counties are still in the process of maintaining those people until the retention period is over.”
Denver7 followed with Doj on Thursday and asked why they were asking for election records. A spokesman for two departments told Denver 7 that he had no comments.
