Gumla (Jharkhand), November 4 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly killed his pregnant minor girlfriend with an axe, in a village in Jharkhand’s Gumla district on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Old Raidih village of Raidih police station area.

The accused has been identified as 19-year-old Suman Yadav, who attacked 17-year-old Anshika Tirkey, who, according to the police, was about five months pregnant.

Police said the girl was a resident of Shanti Nagar in Dharamjaigarh, Chhattisgarh and was staying at the accused’s house for about a week.

According to local people, there was a dispute between the couple on Tuesday morning. In anger, Suman picked up an ax and attacked Anshika, killing her on the spot.

The shocking thing is that he neither tried to run away nor hide the crime, and remained inside the house until the police arrived.

Raidih police station in-charge Sandeep Kumar Yadav reached the spot with his team and arrested Yadav. The victim’s body was sent to Gumla Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.

Police said that Yadav has confessed to the murder. He reportedly told authorities that he was under extreme guilt and fear for bringing home a minor girl and getting her pregnant, and he felt it would bring shame to the family.

The mother of the accused told the police that her son was mentally disturbed for the last few days and was not sleeping properly.

The villagers also claimed that the family and social pressure associated with the girl’s pregnancy took a toll on the accused.

This incident has caused shock, fear and deep resentment among the villagers. The police have intensified the investigation to probe all possible aspects – including mental health issues, family pressure and whether the murder was premeditated.

Raidih police station in-charge said that detailed interrogation of the accused is going on and further action will be taken on the basis of post-mortem report and investigation findings.

After this heinous massacre, there is an atmosphere of mourning and panic in the village.
