In a rare incident, a 27-year-old Pakistani woman gave birth to six babies at a hospital in Rawalpindi.according to a report dawnOn April 19, Zeenat Waheed gave birth to sextuplets – our baby boy and two girls – within an hour.
Notably, Ms. Waheed was admitted to the hospital on Thursday evening due to labor pains. After a major surgery, the woman gave birth to sextuplets. Dr Zafar said the mother and her six children were healthy and had no complications. The babies were in good health and weighed less than two pounds each.
“The sextuplets and their mother are doing well; however, doctors have placed the babies in an incubator,” Dr. Farzana, the hospital’s medical superintendent, told CNN dawn.
The hospital administration expressed happiness over the arrival of the sextuplets and ensured that all medical support and facilities are provided to their family during their stay in the hospital. The baby will continue to receive medical care in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit until allowed to go home.
It is rare for such a large number of babies to be born alive, with only 1 in 4.5 million pregnancies believed to result in sextuplets. A multiple pregnancy is when a woman becomes pregnant with two or more fetuses at the same time, either when the fertilized egg divides before implanting in the uterus (as is the case with identical twins), or when different eggs are fertilized by different eggs . Sperm (produces fraternal twins), according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Pregnancies involving three or more fetuses are extremely rare. They are also associated with a higher risk of complications compared with singleton pregnancies. Fertility drugs increase the chance of multiple pregnancies because they stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs.
The first surviving sextuplets were born in South Africa in 1974.
