Impeachment inquiry stalls, House Republicans invite Biden to testify

House Republicans on Thursday invited President Joe Biden to testify before Congress as part of the impeachment inquiry into his and his family’s business affairs.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Cuomo sent a letter to the Democratic president inviting him to a public hearing to “explain under oath” the extent of his involvement in the Biden family business.

“Given the wide disparity between your public statements and the evidence gathered by the committee, as well as the White House’s obstructionism, it is in the best interest of the American people that you answer members of Congress’ questions directly, and I hereby invite you to do so,” the Kentucky Republican wrote.

While Biden is unlikely to agree to appear before lawmakers under such circumstances, Cuomo pointed to previous examples of presidents testifying before Congress.

“As you are aware, presidents before you have provided testimony before congressional committees, including President Ford’s 1974 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Criminal Justice,” Cuomo wrote.

The invitation comes as a months-long investigation into Biden comes to an end and Republicans face the stark reality that there is a lack of political will within the conference to move forward with actual impeachment. Still, leaders of the effort, including Cuomo, are facing growing political pressure to deliver something after months of investigations into the Biden family and their international business dealings.

The White House has repeatedly called the investigation baseless and told Republicans to “move on” and focus on the “real problems” Americans want solved.

“This is a tragic stunt at the end of a death impeachment,” spokesman Ian Sams said in a social media post last week. “That’s it for today, friends.”

The committee alleges that the Biden family traded on the surname in an alleged influence peddling scheme in which Republicans sought to divert some phone calls between Joe Biden (when he was vice president or in office) and his vice president Or meet for dinner. Son Hunter Biden and Hunter’s business partner.

But despite investing countless resources over the past year and interviewing dozens of witnesses, including Hunter and the president’s brother James, Republicans have yet to provide any evidence that Joe Biden directly participated in or benefited from his family’s involvement in public office. enterprise.

Democrats remain unanimous in their opposition to the investigation, with Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Democratic overseer who oversees matters, calling on Republican lawmakers to end the investigation without any credible evidence.

“The Republican impeachment inquiry is a circus,” Oversight Democrats wrote on social media platform X. “It’s time to fold the tent.”

Seeking the president’s testimony could ultimately be the final step in the investigation.

Late last year, Republicans leading the investigation had privately discussed a vote on articles of impeachment in the new year, but growing criticism from within their own party has forced them to change tack. Now, Cuomo is considering referring the family’s criminal case to the Justice Department, a largely symbolic move that is unlikely to lead to action.
