According to the latest weather bulletin of IMD, dense to very dense fog is likely to occur during night and morning hours over Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab till December 29, while similar conditions may persist in Uttarakhand till December 28 and Madhya Pradesh till December 25.
The weather agency said dense fog is likely to persist in parts of Bihar till December 25, with fog expected again between December 26 and 28.
Fog and cold day alert in Jammu, Himachal, Bengal
IMD has warned of dense fog in isolated areas of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha till December 28, while visibility may reduce over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Jharkhand till December 25.
According to the IMD bulletin, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are likely to be affected till December 24, while fog may persist over Northeast India till December 26.
The IMD said cold day conditions are expected to persist over isolated parts of East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh on December 24, while Bihar may continue to experience cold days till December 28.
Western disturbance will affect weather patterns
The IMD said the current weather conditions are being driven by a strong subtropical westerly jet stream over northwest India along with a western disturbance formed in the form of a trough in the mid and upper troposphere levels.
A cyclonic circulation over South Tamil Nadu is also affecting the regional weather patterns.
The IMD said a fresh but weak western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from December 27. Under its influence, light to moderate rain or snowfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between December 27 and 29.
There is also a possibility of rain and thundershowers with lightning over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on December 27 and 28.
Temperature trends and outlook
According to IMD data, during the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures dropped below 5 degrees Celsius in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, while large parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab recorded temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has predicted a gradual drop of 2-3 degrees Celsius in the minimum temperatures over parts of northwest, central and western India over the next two days, with no major change thereafter.
Temperatures over eastern India are likely to remain stable for the next 24 hours, after which there will be a slight decline.
Delhi-NCR weather update
For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has predicted light to moderate fog with isolated dense areas during morning hours from December 24.
The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may drop to 6 degrees Celsius by December 26 with light north-westerly winds.
Advisory issued for fishermen
IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into Gulf of Mannar and adjoining sea areas as well as parts of Bay of Bengal including waters off Somalia coast between December 24 and 28 due to adverse weather conditions.
