26 -year -old UPSC aspiration died after being trapped in a lift during a big fire at a retail store in Karol Bagh, Delhi on Friday evening. The victim, known as Dhirendra Pratap Singh, was found dead inside the lift about eight hours after the fire.
Just before his death, Dhirendra sent a frustrated message to his brother to WhatsApp, “Brother, I am stuck in the lift … I can’t breathe … please save me.” He also argued for help, but was not saved in time.
His body was recovered from the lift by rescue teams at around 2:30 pm.
Dhirendra, a native of Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, was living in a PG residence in Karol Bagh and preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
He had recently approved the prelims and was preparing for the Mains exam. He earned a political science degree and was chasing his guru.
Talking to Annie, Vikram said, “My brother went to the huge mega mart to shop in the evening. 6:51 pm, I received a WhatsApp message saying that he was trapped inside the lift and struggling to breathe. His brother Vikram Singh said, “He was the most disciplined and hardworking man. He wanted to serve the country as a civil servant. Instead, due to someone else’s negligence, he died a painful death,” his brother Vikram Singh said, said, shed tears.
He alleged that the store staff did not respond and they stopped power and fled. He said, “No one tried to save him. Even the police did not respond initially. We kept pleading for help till late night. It was only 2:30 pm that the store admitted that someone was trapped inside,” he said.
Dhirendra’s sister, Dr. Swati said, “My brother has gone, but his mall will open again. People use lifts with trolley bags every day in the mall. If someone was inside, why was there no one? He stopped and left power. Their store would be repaired, but my brother will not come back.
According to Delhi Fire Service Officer Ravi Nath, fire calls were received from Vishal Mega Mart at 6:44 am on Friday. He said, “This is a ground plus three-floor structure. A male body was recovered from the lift around 2 pm. The reason for the fire, the availability of fire safety equipment, and the status of the fire NOC is being investigated,” he said. (AI)
