Web Desk, 12/07/2025

Srinagar, July 11, KDC: In a major boost to expand the pools of trained human resources, under the aegis of the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar, Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, 11,000 carpet weavers have been trained from various districts under various skill development programs.

The weavers have been trained on the modified carpet tax, which will lead a long way for the famous hand knitted carpets to enter the top markets, which is the second most exported handmade product from Kashmir.

In a press statement issued here today, Director IICT, Zubair Ahmed said that the services of master trainers have distinguished themselves in the field of carpet weaving, they are availed to train the weavers skilled and semi-skilled in different batches, both in the IICT premises and in separate districts in the IICT campus. The exports of hand -over -extinguished carpets from Kashmir have touched 838.70 crores in the last three financial years, despite challenges due to global conflicts that affect markets in the Middle East and other destinations.

To make the training programs more attractive for trainees, the IICT also provides monthly stipend as per the plan guidelines. He said, “For these short-term training programs of 4-6 months with an intake capacity of 20, the stipend is from 1000 to ₹ 3750 per month under various skills-based schemes of the Ministry of Textiles,” he said.
