Is it a gallery or a hotel? With plenty of artifacts and museum-worthy curiosities, even the walk to breakfast is a cultural experience. It’s no surprise that affluent locals come here to take photos for Insta, but you’re more likely to run into an out-of-town celebrity renting a penthouse suite (Salma Hayek, Anne Hathawayand Mark Zuckerberg are all staying). That said, the atmosphere is only the tiniest bit pretentious, and entirely friendly and relaxed.
Service
Personalized service is paramount and nothing seems to be too much trouble (when I returned from a hike in the Karura forest, caked in red mud, my clothes were taken to the wash and returned within three hours). The stylish Sardars (otherwise known as the Darbaan team) wear pink silk suits embroidered with flowers and birds.
bed and bath
All 137 rooms are a little rock star, with splashes of rich, gorgeous color: a red wall here, a burgundy rug there, nestled between extreme beige and white. Expect free-standing baths or rain showers, leather sofas, and yet more art in glass-walled bathrooms.
In the split-level penthouse suite, connected by a mahogany staircase, a three-metre-tall glass chandelier swings. The garden terrace rooms are particularly beautiful, with balconies overlooking a protected wetland at the rear that attracts birdlife from Hadassah ibis to Marabou storks.

Food and Drink
At Tribe’s signature restaurant, Jiko, the menu may span the African continent, but it also pays homage to Kenya’s farmers with plenty of local, organic ingredients. Enjoy forest mushroom soup with baobab powder, followed by barbecued, spicy suya nundu skewers with cassava, green beans and sumac.
If the weather is warm, opt for cocktails at The Nest (located on the rooftop), then dine al fresco on the plant-filled terrace by the pool.
Since the Chef’s Table is one of the hottest seats in the city, book in advance for Chef Moha’s multi-course tasting menu, known for its bold flavors.
Breakfast is buffet style, with additional food cooked to order (don’t forget to try the fresh pineapple and mint juice, a Kenyan favourite). The 24-hour “grab and go” service for ready-to-eat meals, snacks and drinks is useful if you’re in a hurry.
Picnic hampers for safari include healthy wraps and a choice of homemade desserts like chocolate cheese cake.

The outdoor swimming pool may seem more decorative than functional, but it’s perfect for cooling off when the temperatures rise, as is the rooftop infinity pool.
On the menu of the contemporary Kaya Spa, new treatments include “Kenya Gold” – a scrub with Kenyan coffee – and “Death by Chocolate”, a massage and delicious chocolate body polish. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the well-equipped gym that is open 24/7. The best part is that you can create your own unique safari experience (organized by chieftains) to include day and night drives.
