atmosphere

One of the three skyscrapers at the Andaz Miami Beach hotel is a restored Art Deco building. The hotel pays homage to the styles prevalent from the 1920s to the 1940s.

The quietly charming interior blends chic modernity with the splendor that fascinated Art Deco architects—curves, three sets of recurring patterns, and aesthetic nuances (e.g., eyebrow-like ledges) that give the building its face-like appearance.

Andaz Miami Beach is filled with these visual elements, from the wavy carpet to the curved furniture to a pair of tubular lights in the bar/lounge that look like a pair of closed eyes.

Every service is done with a smile. And it feels very genuine.

When I checked in, I was greeted warmly by the restaurant staff who would proclaim that they were “ready to attend to any of your needs” without sounding like they were asking for a tip.

I stayed in the Ocean View Balcony Suite, which is divided into a spacious living room with sliding doors to the bedroom and an adjoining en suite bathroom. Stylish, curvy furniture continues the Art Deco theme. Half bedroom, half art.

Aguasal Restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner

Aguasal Restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner (Hyatt Andaz Miami Beach)

A rich breakfast is served in the hotel’s charming Aguasal restaurant. I went to the Continental and was charmed by the pastry basket, a belt-free option for the “artisan baked pastries” ($24), which included custard croissants, olive oil jam chocolate tart, and cream and jam scones. The deluxe Greek yogurt ($22) that followed made me need to lie down.

In the evening, Aguasal transforms into a fine seafood restaurant: garlic shrimp ($24) and fried snapper in tartar sauce ($44).

The bar/lounge offers coffee, juices and pastries in the morning, and cocktails and snacks in the evening. The hotel also has a circular poolside bar serving drinks and snacks.
