Although there is a shuttle available, Terminal 2 is a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, with Terminal 1 just beyond, making life as easy as can be. The rooms have the feel of a chain hotel, but they have everything you need, and there’s always a bit of buzz in the open-plan bar and restaurant. Self-check-in and check-out counters make your life easier if you’re nervous after a long flight.

2. Radisson Blu Hotel Dublin Airport
Just on the other side of the main Airport Road, the Radisson Blu is second only to the Maldron in terms of location. If you don’t want to lug your suitcase an eight-minute walk, there are regular shuttle buses that run 24 hours a day. Inside, the rooms are sleek and contemporary, and if your flight departs before 6am, free breakfast is available. Otherwise, a hearty buffet is available from 6.30am to 10.30am. Guests also have access to the facilities of the nearby ALSAA Swimming Pool and Leisure Complex with gym, sauna and swimming pool.

3. Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport
Probably the easiest option if you’re driving, this huge hotel is about a 10-minute drive from the airport and has ample parking for both short- and long-term stays. It has a contemporary sleek interior with lots of glass and a spacious, airy lobby. All 608 bedrooms are a good size, although rooms on higher floors have better views, some overlooking the city and the coast beyond. Downstairs, the casual Playwright Bar is great for a quiet meal, but if you want a proper meal the Italian restaurant is surprisingly good – they have a wood-burning oven for pizza and the portions are huge. A good breakfast buffet is also available.

4. Carlton Dublin Airport Hotel

A five-minute drive from the terminals, this is another good way if you’re bringing (or renting) a car, although there is also a free shuttle bus. However, the real selling point is the rooftop bar and restaurant, which has a spectacular view of the runway and is much more stylish than your everyday airport hotel. It also has an updated fitness suite, with plenty of equipment for pre- or post-flight workouts. There are 118 rooms and suites, some of which have balconies, and they are all well soundproofed and come with blackout curtains, always handy after a long trip.

5. Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport by IHG Hotel
The advantage of this location, a seven-minute drive from the airport, is that there is some beautiful countryside, with some greenery nearby. There are plenty of parking spaces, but there’s also a complimentary shuttle bus, which runs every 30 minutes and is electric, no less – keep in mind that it drops you off in Zone 16, a five-minute walk from Terminal 2. There’s a full gym, and if you book one of the club level rooms, you get complimentary lounge access with continental breakfast in the morning and refreshments in the evening.

6. Premier Inn Dublin Airport Hotel
On an industrial estate less than ten minutes’ drive from the airport, this Premier Inn is a good choice for a budget stay. There is a shuttle bus (£2.50) that runs back and forth every half hour, but be aware that the service stops briefly in the morning and evening – check their timings in advance to make sure it doesn’t clash with your departure. Inside, everything is running as normal, and Premier Plus rooms also have access to better WiFi, a mini fridge, and a coffee machine. There is a restaurant on site, and a few fast food shops and coffee spots within walking distance.

7. Metro Hotel Dublin Airport
Only a 10-minute drive from the airport, the metro has been recently renovated and has everything you need for a short stay. The two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors are ideal for groups or families – there are also family suites with bunk beds, which are useful if traveling with children. The free shuttle bus runs from 4am to midnight, leaving from the hotel’s coach park, so be sure to allow a few extra minutes for the walk to the terminals.

8. Grand Hotel Malahide
Who says airport hotels have to be right next to the terminals? If you’re happy to travel a little further than the seaside village of Malahide, this hotel is a great place to stay, with old-fashioned charm and spectacular views of the water. Malahide is a lovely place, so you can go for dinner at a nice neighborhood restaurant instead of getting room service and watching TV. And when it’s time to get to the airport, it’s an easy 20-minute drive or taxi ride away.

9. Gibson Hotel
Another hotel that’s not quite an airport hotel, but mark my point – The Gibson is technically in the city centre, but right on the edge of the Docklands and, by extension, the M50 tunnel which takes you straight to the airport. The Dublin Express bus service stops right outside the hotel and will get you to the airport in 15 to 20 minutes, and the hotel is sleek and cool, right next to the 3Arena (hence the skyrocketing prices on big event nights). Some rooms have balconies, which are beautiful on sunny days.

10. Travelodge Dublin Airport North
It’s never going to win any style awards, but if you’re looking for a cheap crash pad that’s relatively close to the airport, you can’t go wrong with a Travelodge. It’s near Swords, only a 10-minute drive from the terminals, and while there is no longer a shuttle bus service from the hotel, you can catch the local 41 bus nearby, or take a taxi. There are actually two Travelodge properties near the airport – Dublin Airport South is in Ballymun, so less convenient, and again, it has no shuttle.
