I found a great gaming TV – and right now it’s cheaper than ever

For years, the LG C series of TVs has been the first choice of gaming fans, the Xbox Series It’s worth reiterating that the features that make gaming great also enhance the viewing experience in every way – the LG C5 is the latest in a series of excellent-looking TVs that regularly top all-round lists.

Even before you turn it on, the LG C5 starts to impress. The display panel is very thin, with all the TV’s bits and gubbins confined to a hidden block at the base behind the screen.

But the real headline for gamers is found at the back. The LG C5 is equipped with four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports. This is for your PS5, Xbox Series

Like an optical illusion, the cracker-thin LG C5 looks like it might break in half in a strong wind. Narrow bezels and a minimal, brushed metal stand complete the look.

The panel is the same as last year’s LG C4 – the C5’s main competition – and runs on the advanced Alpha a9 Gen 8 AI processor, which manages brightness in a more natural way as well as enabling a suite of AI features.

Overall image quality is superb, with the OLED technology delivering infinite contrast, deep blacks and punchy highlights without blooming, even in bright rooms.

It’s also highly customizable, with the option to have the AI handle the image, fine-tune it as you wish, or use the advanced Filmmaker mode, which aims to display movies and shows as the director intended, turning off image and motion enhancements to deliver accurate colors and the proper frame rates.

The upscaling of low resolution sources on the LG C5 is some of the best I’ve seen, cleaning up fuzzy edges and subtly enhancing textures without looking overly sharp. There’s still blur in non-HD video, but upscaled 1080p video on the C5 is difficult to distinguish from true 4K at a glance.

There’s some occasional flicker on fast-moving, out-of-focus textures as the C5 tries to interpolate frames – the image processor sometimes has trouble with backgrounds playing out scenes – but changing the speed settings clears things up.

Gaming Mode turns off the post-processing trickery to deliver only fully rendered frames. Football looks great here too, with the Sports mode delivering fluid motion and detail without messing with the settings.

LG’s webOS interface is sleek, intuitive, and fast to navigate. The remote can be used like the Wii remote to select things on-screen, which is most useful when entering Wi-Fi passwords, etc. Your home screen pulls recommended content from a variety of apps, channels, and streaming services, and an AI assistant accessible on the remote can guide you to your favorite genres, directors, and actors.

The AI assistant is surprisingly efficient. i asked simpsonsAnd the results included episodes and series from the Disney+ app, as you might expect, but also E4, which was showing the program. Let the AI keep a watchful eye on your viewing history, and it will get better at recommending new things to watch.

Auto low-latency mode turns on when playing games to reduce input lag (Steve Hogarty/The Independent)

Unlike LCD TVs that use a backlight, each of the C5’s eight million pixels is self-emitting, meaning they can turn on and off individually. This makes a huge difference for gaming.

OLED displays create true, deep blacks and an infinite contrast ratio that make shadowy scenes in games more atmospheric, while recreating bright highlights with an intensity that backlit TVs can’t replicate. This pixel-level control results in nearly instant response times, eliminating the ghosting and blur that can plague lesser screens during fast-paced action.

The C5 supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, the HDR formats used by Xbox and PlayStation. This means the C5 can display a wider range of brightness levels between perfect black and perfect white, giving the image more detail in the shadows and more striking highlights.

You will see the difference in games like cyberpunk 2077Where neon hoardings are dazzling at night, and suddenly going from a dark interior to blazing sunlight is enough to make you squint.

lg c5
The 55in LG C5 is the smallest in the line-up to get the Brightness Booster feature (LG).

One drawback with the formats is that it doesn’t support HDR10+, which is a new HDR standard used by some streaming services that is gaining popularity, but it won’t impact anyone playing on current-generation consoles.

Otherwise, the LG C5 is packed with features specifically designed to support next-generation gaming. It has a native 144Hz refresh rate, which means incredibly smooth and fluid motion on Xbox and PlayStation games that support it, as well as headroom for PC gamers with sufficiently powerful setups.

This is complemented by full support for Nvidia and AMD’s variable refresh rates, a feature that dynamically syncs the TV with your console or PC’s frame rate to eliminate screen tearing – that ugly visual glitch where the image appears to stutter or break.

Input lag – the delay between your controller and what happens on the screen – falls to less than 10ms in the C5’s dedicated game mode. Auto Low Latency mode automatically detects when you’re playing a game and switches the TV to its fastest setting, so there’s no lag every time you play a game. house under the hammer,

Uk CheapergamingGreat..
