‘I am cornish, not English,’ MP says in the staunch defense of Cornwall

Speaking to the House of Commons during a debate on the English deviation and the Community Empowerment Bill, Paran Moon said he was “joking” to describe himself as cornish.

During the second reading of the bill, he said to the Commons: “I am often asked, even by colleagues of this place, as a Cornishman, do I consider myself English?

“With hundreds of thousands of corn men and women, I am often sad for my answer. So let me be completely clear, I am Cornish, not English.

MP Paran Moon, for Kamborn and Reduth, said that people of Cornwall often face ridicule to express pride in their area ,House of Commons/UK Parliament/PA,

“Although I freely accept that some of my best friends are English.

“And at home, especially young people, who have been ridiculed equally, I say to them: loud and proud.

“It’s okay to consider yourself cornish and British.”

He said: “During this bill, I will work with the government to ensure that the bill is passed which respects the Cornish National Minority Status and provides a historical deviation system that fulfills our manifesto commitment.

“A deviation system that provides for economic development aid, we need to highlight the cornish Celtic tiger.

“A deviation system that gives us funds and resources to deal with our handicapped housing crisis. A deviation deal that celebrates the Cornish National Minority Status.

“This is a responsibility that not only weighs on the brain, for us it is not only about the functional local government, this path goes, deep into our souls.

“A centuries-old desire to increase autonomy and self-governance in our place on this multinational island. I urge ministers, together, let’s understand the opportunity of this one generation.”
